NAPLES - Christmas came early for the Redlands Christian Migrant Association (RCMA).

Wednesday morning, the organization learned it was the recipient of almost $113,000 in grant funds from Six L's Packing Company, the largest tomato grower and packer in the state. The money will support literacy, after school and child care programs for children in Immokalee and across the state.

"This is a super, super Christmas present," said Barbara Mainster, executive director of RCMA. "We are just thrilled."

Mainster said the money will be used to:

■ Generate funding to provide child care for 150 Immokalee children for an entire season

■ Provide 50 after school scholarships for students at the Immokalee Community School, a kindergarten to sixth grade school operated by RCMA.

■ Provide homework help, tutoring, literacy and computer training, and enrichment and sports activities

■ Support statewide literacy programs, including the Reading is Fundamental Program and a lending library at each of RCMA's 74 centers.Three times a year, children receive free books at Reading is Fundamental distributions. Reading is Fundamental provides 75 percent of the funding and the donation from Six L's will cover RCMA's 25 percent requirement.

Six L's has been involved with RCMA for some time, contributing to a mural and Christmas card project.

"We believe RCMA does very important work and are happy to be able to support the child care for the babies, the literacy work with families, getting books into all 8,000 children's homes, and helping the Immokalee school-age children get the afterschool homework help they need," said Six L's CEO Larry Lipman.
