Watermelons
Types of watermelon most typically purchased are Red Seedless and Red Seeded. However, Yellow Meat watermelon offers an exciting alternative for the watermelon lover. California, Florida, Texas, and Georgia rank as the top producers. Although watermelon is available year-round and supplemented by imported product, 75% is marketed between June and August. Watermelon is fat and cholesterol free. Low in sodium and a good source of Vitamin A and high in Vitamin C. Handling tips: Display and store watermelon at temperatures between 50 - 60 degrees. At temperatures lower than 50 degrees, watermelon loses color. Holding the fruit at room temperature for a short period of time (approximately a week) will improve flavor and color. Do not mist.
